Lacrosse Trio Honored By ECAC
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., June 5, 2002 -- Springfield College senior attackman
Bill Metzger and junior defenseman
Mike Bartol were named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Men’s Lacrosse All-Star Second-Team.
On women’s side, Springfield College freshman defender
Erin Smith was selected to the ECAC All-Star Second-Team.
Metzger, a native of
Northampton, Mass., was named the Pilgrim League-East Division Player of the Year and a New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Second-Team All Star. He led the Pride with 66 points, 43 goals and 23 assists. Metzger is tied for 12th on the SC all-time scoring list with 143 points (103 goals, 43 assists), and set a single-season record with 58 goals in 2001.
Bartol, a team captain from
Saratoga, N.Y., was the Pride's top defenseman this season. He anchored a unit that held its opposition to 12.71 goals per game, including nine games of 10 or fewer points. Bartol finished second on the team with 70 ground balls and scored three goals.
Smith, who is from
Longmeadow, Mass., was a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference selection this spring. She led the Pride with 63 ground balls and was fifth with 26 points (16 goals, 10 assists). Smith was a key member of a defensive unit that held its opposition to a NEWMAC low 7.6 goals per game.
The SC women (13-5) won its first conference championship ever and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. The Pride men (13-6) won the ECAC Division III New England Championship.
