Worcester, Mass. - February 22, 2014 - Kellie Pennington (Monson, Mass.) led the Springfield College women's swimming & diving team on Saturday night, breaking her school and conference record in the 200 free at the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship, hosted by WPI.
Pennington put together a simply dominating performance in the 200 free as she smashed her school and NEWMAC record, delivering a time of 1:50.02, better her previous mark of 1:52.38 she set in 2012. Callie Phillips (East Longmeadow, Mass.) took third in 1:53.17 and Ashleigh Monroe (Southbury, Conn.) was right behind her in fourth in 1:53.62.
Springfield currently sits in second place in the team standings with 836.5 points. MIT leads with 927 points.
Christiana Greco (Wilbraham, Mass.) captured her first individual conference championship in the 100 fly after registering an NCAA "B" cut of 56.90. Delaney Dyjak (Ludlow, Mass.) also achieved an NCAA "B" cut time after tying for third in 57.44, and Kelsey Poole (Westfield, Mass.) touched eighth in 58.44.
Emily Medeiros (Wakefield, Mass.) narrowly missed the NEWMAC record in the 100 breast as she powered past the competition with a winning time of 1:04.27. Nicolle Stracqualursi (Dedham, Mass.) (1:06.41) finished third, Nicole Scotto (Southbury, Conn.) (1:07.46) placed fourth and Marley McFadden (Owego, N.Y.) placed 10th in 1:08.63.
Phillips kicked off the night with a second-place finish in the 400 IM after posting an NCAA "B" cut time of 4:31.46. Teammate Katherine Batch (High Bridge, N.J.) placed eighth in 4:48.32, while Stephanie Antonellis (Orange, Conn.) took 10th in 4:50.44.
The Pride's 200 medley relay team of Poole, Medeiros, Greco and Dyjak posted a third place finish with an NCAA "B" time of 1:46.46.
In the 100 back, Poole took 10th overall with a time of 1:00.04.
The NEWMAC Championship will conclude on Sunday with the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, women's three-meter dive, and the 400 free relay.
