Springfield, Mass. - October 26, 2013 - The Springfield College men's soccer team came back from a two-goal deficit to force overtime with New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival MIT on Saturday at Brock-Affleck Field on Homecoming weekend.
The Engineers prevailed, scoring the game-winning goal in the 97th minute. Matthew Monheit (Abington, Pa.) tallied the overtime goal, sending a cross-shot into the left corner of the goal.
MIT improves to 11-3-1 (5-0-1, NEWMAC) with the win, while Springfield drops to 12-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Sean Bingham (Garden City, N.Y.) had a hat trick in the first half, scoring all three of MIT's regulation goals. The sophomore struck for the game's first goal in the 23rd minute. He dribbled past a defender and took a shot that deflected into the goal for a 1-0 MIT lead.
Drew Vanasse (Concord, Mass.) tied it up in the 27th minute, assisted by Ryan Malone (Chicopee, Mass.). Malone sent a cross-pass in from the left side and Vanasse finished it for his fourth goal of the season and 1-1 tie.
Bingham had an answer though, scoring the go-ahead goal in the 29th minute for a 2-1 MIT lead. Austin Freel (San Diego, Calif.) had the assist. Bingham notched his hat trick in the 36th minute to give the Engineers a 3-1 lead before the half. Bingham sent a shot above the reach of Springfield goalie Billy Schmid (Wethersfield, Conn.) and into the goal.
Springfield made it a one-goal game early in the second half on a goal by Malone. The defender dribbled past a defender and beat the keeper on the far post for his team-leading 10th goal of the year.
MIT received a red card midway through the second half and Springfield took advantage as Danny Amato (Newington, Conn.) scored with the one-man advantage to knot the game up at 3 goals apiece to force overtime. Vanasse had the assist, his fifth of the year.
Schmid had six saves for Springfield while MIT's Jake Amereno (Commack, N.Y.) had four.
Springfield will host Fitchburg State on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. for a non-conference match up. MIT will host Emmanuel College at the same time on Wednesday.
