Amherst Captures the Springfield February Men's Track & Field Meet; Springfield Takes Fifth

Springfield, Mass. -- February 4, 2012 -- Amherst College defeated nine other teams at this afternoon's Springfield February Men's Track & Field meet at the Springfield College Field House, scoring 134 points in the process. Host Springfield finished fifth.

The order of the team finish was as follows: Amherst (134), Oneonta State (121.50), Williams (120), Hartford (111), Springfield (101), Stevens (67.50), Trinity (31), Eastern Connecticut State (19), Manhattanville (4) and Mt. St. Mary's (4).

Winners on the men's side for Springfield College included junior Ryan O'Connell (Middleboro, Mass.) in the mile run with a time of 4:22.62, and senior and Division III defending indoor national champion Kevin Coyle (Bradford, N.H.) in the long jump in 6.82 meters.

Others who performed well for the home team included junior Anthony Salvucci (Burlington, Mass.) in the 3000, finishing second with a time of 8:49.18; and senior Dylan Brock ((Acton, Mass.) in the 60-meter dash. He finished eighth in 7.40 seconds. Brock also placed third in the long jump (6.55 meters).

Junior Matt Scully (Watertown, Conn.) placed fifth in the 800-meters in 2:01.12. Senior Ryan Allison (Voorheesville, N.Y.) came in third in the 1000 in 2:44.51. Behind him in the same race was junior Eric Archambeault (Douglas, Mass.) in fifth in 2:45.64, and senior James Gornall (Uxbridge, Mass.) in sixth in 2:45.66.

In the 200, freshman Michael Johnson (Berkley, Mass.) placed fifth for the Pride with a time of 23.65.

In the 4x400 meter relay, SC placed fourth in 3:31.82. That included the quartet of Coyle, Johnson, freshman Walker Smith (Mountain Lakes, N.J.), and Salvucci.

In the weight throw, sophomore Scott Leech (Lincoln, R.I.) took seventh with a toss of 13.07 meters. Freshman Mason Durant (Pittsfield, Mass.) was second in the shot put at 14.25 meters. Sophomore William Ferguson (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) took third in the high jump at 1.81 meters. Finally, in the triple jump, freshman Jessie Charette (Woonsocket, R.I.) placed third with a leap of 13.00 meters.
