It is the second time a Springfield College men's gymnast has received this award this season. Senior Ty Evans (San Jose, Calif.) also earned this award on February 10.
As a team, Springfield College hosted two meets in a three-day period. It recorded its top two scores of the year, one in a win, the other in a loss. Last Friday (Mar. 9), SC lost to Army, 331.200 to 330.000. Two days later, also in Blake Arena, SC defeated William & Mary, 332.700 to 331.800. The 332.700 was SC's top team score of the season.
Ponce, a sophomore from Tolland, Conn., put together a pair of excellent scores in his specialty, the still rings. On both occasions, he finished first. The sports biology major recorded a score of 15.100 against Army. He then recorded an even better score of 15.400 versus William & Mary.
Ponce also competed in the pommel horse and parallel bars in each meet. Against Army, he finished fourth in the bars with a 13.400.
"Ryan has been an incredibly steady performer for us all year long," said his coach, Steve Posner, now in his 30th year at Springfield College.
Ponce generally finishes first more often than not in the still rings in each meet.
