Youth Powers Football To 55-27 Season-Opening Win At Fitchburg State

Josh Carter Box Score

Fitchburg, Mass. - September 4, 2008 - The Springfield College football team opened up the 2008 season with a 55-27 win at Fitchburg State on Thursday evening behind the stellar play of several new faces on campus. Every offensive touchdown was scored by either a freshman or a sophomore as the Pride improved to 1-0 on the year.

The Pride raced out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter behind the strong play of the freshman duo of quarterback Josh Carter (Marlborough, Mass.) and halfback Marc Safer (St. Johns, Fla.). However, the home Falcons battled back, cutting the lead to one at 14-13.

As was the case the entire game, Springfield's rushing attack was too much as it extended its lead to 27-13 at the half. In the first half alone, the Pride amassed over 300 yards on the ground.

Springfield put the game away for good in the third as a Carter rushing touchdown and a defensive score by junior Corey Spencer (Dorchester, Mass.) just 18 seconds made the score 41-13 with six minutes left in the third. Spencer picked off a Fitchburg State pass and brought it back 40 yards for six points for Springfield.

In the fourth, Carter connected with sophomore wideout Tim Brady (Southbury, Conn.) for a 52-yard touchdown through the air before quarterback John Schmaltz (Cromwell, Conn.) would find the end zone from three yards out to give Springfield a 55-27 win.

Safer finished with a pair of first half touchdowns while Carter scored a pair on the ground and one through the air. Sophomore fullback Justin Fuller (Berkley, Mass.) also found the end zone on the evening.

Springfield’s defense was led by senior Sean Richey (Setauket, N.Y.) and junior Cody Flanigan (Auburn, N.Y.). Richey was solid, totaling 11 tackles (ten solo, one assisted), while Flanigan also notched 11 tackles with 1.5 sacks.

Up next for the Pride awaits Union on September 13 in Springfield's home-opener. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 pm under the lights at Stagg Field.
