Women's Gymnastics Easily Handles RIC, 181.675 to 165.325

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – February 9, 2008 – Sophomore Alexandra Ploenes (Medina, Ohio) captured the all-around competition and placed first on the balance beam as she led her Springfield College women’s gymnastics team to victory in a dual meet with Rhode Island College this afternoon at Springfield College’s Blake Arena. The score was 181.675 to 165.325.

Ploenes excelled on the balance beam with a winning score of 9.550, while the next best score was an 8.700. Ploenes’ consistency was the reason why she took the all-around as she also finished fifth on the vault (9.050), fourth on the uneven parallel bars (9.050), and third on the floor exercise (9.350).

The Pride saw many members of its team step up as Springfield College finished with at least the top three in every event. A different member of the team took first place in each of this afternoon’s events.

Besides Ploenes’ first in the balance beam, Springfield College junior Jacqui Mazzola (Framingham, Mass.) won the top spot on the vault with a 9.500. Freshman Ashley Moreck (Berlin, Md.) continued the momentum for the Pride as she scored a 9.300 on the uneven parallel bars. Then sophomore Kayleigh Davis (Whitefield, N.H.) finished the day for Springfield College by winning the floor exercise with a 9.450.

For Rhode Island College, freshman Robyn Albert (Sharon, Mass.) had their top all-around score with a 35.075. She placed fourth in the balance beam with a 8.550.

Next up for the Pride is SUNY Cortland on Sunday, February 17 in Blake Arena at 1:00 p.m.
