Men's Swimming & Diving Captures First NEWMAC Championship

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Feb. 27, 2005 – The Springfield College men’s swimming & diving team captured its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Sunday at MIT. SC compiled 884 points, outdistancing Coast Guard (863) and host MIT (809) to round out the top three teams of the seven-team field.
Senior All-American
Mike Shaw (Westfield, Mass.) won the one- (527.45) and three-meter (573.60) diving events for the third year in a row, as SC divers swept the top-three places in both events. Freshmen
Ben Casavant (Acton, Mass.) and
Scott Gangloff (Newington, Conn.) took second and third, respectively, on each board.
Freshman
Roy Burch (Warwick, Bermuda) was victorious in the 100 free in a NEWMAC-record 45.69 seconds, while swimming legs on SC's victorious 200- and 400-yard free relays. He joined seniors
Louis Arruda (West Warwick, R.I.).,
Blake Leshnick (Suffern, N.Y.) and
Jeff Doornweerd (Meriden, Conn.) to win the 200-free relay (1:23.61), while Burch, Arruda, Doornweerd, and sophomore
Chris LeCompte (Londonderry, N.H.) took first in the 400 free relay (3:06.38). Both relay times were NEWMAC and SC records.
Junior
Dan Moran (Wilbraham, Mass.) won the 200 fly in a school-record time of 1:52.34.

Diving Coach Peter Avdoulos
Peter Avdoulos is regarded as one of the top diving coaches in the nation, and will enter his 28th season as the diving coach for both the men's and women's programs in 2012-2013. The current NEWMAC Men's Diving Coach of the Year, Avdoulos has coached countless All-New England and All-American divers, as well as several National Champions.
