Baseball Sweeps WPI, 20-0 And 2-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 17, 2003- Springfield College sophomore rightfielder John Beattie (Longmeadow, Mass.) went 2-for-5 with four runs batted in as the Pride defeated WPI, 20-0, in the first game of a doubleheader in New England’s Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action this afternoon on Berry-Allen Field.

SC right-hander Todd Royce (Chester, N.H.) tossed a five-hitter and struck out six to win his third consecutive decision. Royce improved his record to 4-2 and registered his second shutout of the season.

The Pride erupted for 15 runs in the fifth inning. Beattie’s grand slam was one of 10 hits in the frame. Junior shortstop Toby Cole (Blue Hill, Maine) ripped a two-run home run in the inning, and freshman third baseman Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) belted a two-run triple.

In game two, sophomore right-hander Brian Royal (Orange, Mass.) hurled a two-hit shutout and struck out eight as SC completed the sweep with a 2-0 win.

WPI’s senior left-hander Matt Clark (Auburn, Mass.) nearly equaled Royal. Clark allowed five hits, struck out six and did not give up an earned run in the loss.

In the first inning, SC senior Dave Folli (Endicott, N.Y.) drove in Cole with what proved to be the decisive run. Cole reached on an error.
