Conk, McGovern Earn NEWMAC All-Conference Honors
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Nov. 12, 2002 – Springfield College placed six student-athletes on the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference teams in field hockey, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball.
Junior back
Maylese Leyva was named to the all-conference first-team Leyva, a
Harwich, Mass. native, was fourth on the team in scoring with nine points including four goals for the Pride (8-12).
Senior midfielder
Brett Oberacker was the lone member of the men’s soccer team to earn all-conference first-team honors. A resident of
Bethel, Conn., Oberacker tied for second on the team with three goals and was fourth with six points. SC (6-13-1) reached the conference tournament semifinals, losing to MIT, 1-0 (Nov. 9).
The women’s soccer team (8-10) was honored with two all-conference second-team selections. Senior forward
Amanda Conk, a native of
Montclair, N.J., tied for the team lead in goals (four) and was second in points (eight). Midfielder
Colleen McGovern, a junior from
Smithfield, R.I., started all 18 games for the Pride and netted the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win at WPI (Oct. 8).
The women’s volleyball team (23-12), which won at least 20 matches for the ninth consecutive season placed two members on the all-conference squad. Senior outside hitter
Heather Schlitz, from
Huntington Station, N.Y., made the NEWMAC All-Conference First-Team for the second straight season, led the Pride in kills (444) and kills per game (3.79). Freshman setter
Alesia Vaccari, who hails from
Winstead, Conn., was tops on the team in assists with 1329 and averaged 11.07 assists per game.

Head Coach John Gibson

John Gibson, a native of London, England, enters his 14th season as head women's soccer at Springfield College in the fall of 2013. Gibson has led the Pride to the NCAA Tournament in six of the last eight years and has established the Pride as one of the top programs in the country. His clubs have registered an impressive a 165-75-21 record.
