Football Returns Home For Showdown With Union

Scott Leech Springfield, Mass. - October 3, 2013 - After two consecutive road games, the Springfield College football team will look to bounce back from its first loss of the season last week and continues Liberty League play by hosting Union for a noon kickoff on Saturday.

Last week…
After winning the first three games of the season, the Pride suffered a tough 36-35 league loss at Rochester last week. The Yellowjackets scored a touchdown and rushed for a two-point conversion with no time on the clock to rally past the Pride. Springfield now stands at 3-1 and 0-1 in Liberty play.

A season ago…
Last year, Union came away with a 49-21 win over the Pride. Turnovers were costly for Springfield in the loss, as they lost five fumbles and an interception in the contest. Quarterback Jonathan Marrero (Boston, Mass.) ran for 119 yards and passed for an additional 118 in his first career start for the Pride.

National Ranks…
Springfield is the top-ranked team in the country in Division III football for rushing yards per game (393.5), is tied for 13th in first down offense (94),and is 27th in the nation in scoring offense (40.3 ppg).

Individually, Marrero is ranked second in the nation in rushing yards (575), sixth in rushing touchdowns (7) and 12th in rushing yards per game (143.8). On the defense, Dan Macalena (Congers, N.Y.) ranks 11th in the country in tackles for loss per game (2.6).

Ground Game Supremecy
Among all the football playing institutions in the entire nation, regardless of division, Springfield ranks second in rushing yards per game. Behind just Division II Harding's total of 397 yards per game, the Pride's 393.5 yards per game ranks higher than all Division I FBS and FCS schools.

All-time series vs. Union…
Springfield narrowly leads the all-time series with Union, 8-7-1. The Pride has dropped the last two match ups with the Dutchmen and last beat Union in 2010 by a score of 26-15.

About Union…
The Dutchmen are in search of their first win on the season (0-3 overall , 0-1 Liberty) and have dropped games to Utica (25-16), Ithaca (17-3), and St. Lawrence (30-20).

Union also opened Liberty League play last week, falling to St. Lawrence. The Union defense gives up more yards in the air than it does on the ground, with opponents averaging 212 passing yards per game, but just 81 rushing yards per game. The Dutchmen are averaging 315 total yards of offense per game while Springfield is averaging an impressive 428 yards per game.
