Football Welcomes Husson For Home Opener

Mike MacDonald Springfield, Mass. – September 12, 2013 – After a 49-40 win over cross-town foe Western New England, the Springfield College football team looks to continue its winning ways as it plays its home opener against Husson on Saturday at 1:00 pm on Stagg Field.

Last week…
In last week’s win over WNE, there was no shortage of offense as the two teams combined for 1,015 yards, including 523 for Springfield. The Pride rallied for 19 fourth quarter points to come away with the win.

Springfield sealed the win with a Matt Berni (Scarsdale, N.Y.) 70-yard interception return for a touchdown with 21 seconds left in the game.

The Pride showed off its rushing attack against the Golden Bears, totaling 469 yards, which was the second-highest single game total in all of Division III last week. Jonathan Marrero (Boston, Mass.) and Louis Fenaroli (Newtown, Conn.) rushed for 149 and 120 yards, respectively.

Defensively, Berni and Sam Weiss (Glasser, N.J.) each recorded 12 tackles, while Max Nacewicz (Sandy Hook, Conn.) had three tackles-for-loss, including a sack.

A season ago…
The Pride cruised to a 36-2 win over Husson in week two of last season, racking up 538 yards of total offense, including 457 on the ground. Springfield had five different players score touchdowns in the game, including returners Joel Altavesta (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Franco Bianchi (Poughquag, N.Y.)). The Pride scored 36 unanswered points, before allowing a safety in the fourth quarter for the Eagles’ only points of the game.

All-time series vs. Husson…
Springfield is 6-1 all-time against Husson. The lone loss came in 2008, giving the Pride four-straight wins over the Eagles. Springfield has allowed a total of 35 points in the last four meetings with Husson, while scoring 189 points against the Eagles in that span.

About Husson…
Husson opened the season last week with a 33-7 loss against Hartwick College. The Eagles tallied just 134 yards of offense on the day, 68 in the air and 66 on the ground. Husson running back Byron Jackson passed the 1,000 mark for career rushing yards in the game. He rushed for a team-leading 46 yards.
