The Pride finished with a total of 613 strokes in this two-day tournament, two shots better than Babson with 615 and seven shots better than Elms College at 620. All five of Springfield's golfers shot in the 70's on Sunday en route to the victory.
As a result, Head Coach Joe Eadie's Springfield team will represent the NECC in the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships in the spring. The NCAA's will be played in Destin, Florida May 14-17, 2013 and will be hosted by Methodist University at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.
Placing fourth as a team was Newbury at 656, followed by Becker at 668, host Daniel Webster at 702, and Mitchell at 753. The course played as a par-71, and was 6,855 yards in length. Springfield and Babson had shared first place, each with a score of 308, after Day 1 (Saturday) of the competition. Elms was in third at 310.
Ziewacz, a sophomore from Simsbury, Conn., fired consecutive rounds of 73 each for a two-day total of 146. Not only did Ziewacz win medalist honors, by winning the tournament, he also earned NECC Player of the Year and NECC Rookie of the Year honors.
Phil Rurak of Elms placed second overall with scores of 73-76=149. In third was Wesley Tryhane of Babson at 76-74=150. In fourth was Henry Fall of Elms at 75-76=151. And in fifth was Vijay Vasandani of Babson at 73-79=152. Those first five were named First Team All-NECC.
The second five were named Second Team All-NECC. They included senior Tom Vollaro of Springfield at 76-78=154, senior Kyle DiFranco of Springfield at 80-76=156, Adam Navarro of Newbury at 78-78=156, Kenny Chong of Babson at 80-76=156, senior Chris Vincent of Springfield at 79-78=157, and Chris Maguire of Babson at 79-78=157.
Grad student Tom Sangeloty was Springfield's fifth-place finisher, placing 12th overall after totaling a 159, with an 81 and 79.
Joe Eadie enters his 19th season as the head men's golf coach at Springfield College in the fall of 2012. Eadie is the head golf professional at the Fenway Golf Range in nearby East Longmeadow, and is in the process of becoming a PGA Professional. Read more.
