Lannan Fuels Women's Lacrosse Comeback Win Over Wheaton, 10-9

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- March 29, 2008 - Kaeleigh Lannan (Derry, N.H.) tallied four goals and added an assist as the Springfield College women’s lacrosse team rallied past Wheaton, 10-9, on Saturday afternoon in both squad's New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener.

The Pride improves to 4-3 overall, 1-0 in league play, while the Lyons drop to 4-5, 0-1.

Trailing 8-7 with 14:08 to go in the game, the Pride rattled off the game's next three goals to take a 10-8 lead with five minutes on the clock. Lannan’s unassisted tally proved to be the game-winner as she beat Wheaton keeper Annalisa Carson top shelf on the run.

The Pride tied the game at eight after Nicole Soucie (Southington, Conn.) converted a beautiful feed from Lannan and took a 9-8 lead after Meagan Dobson (Longmeadow, Mass.) converted on a free-position attempt with 9:06 on the clock.

Wheaton had a chance to tie the game in the final minute but goalkeeper Lauren McAulay (Yorktown, N.Y.) was up for the task as she made two point blank saves to preserve the victory for the Pride.

Springfield took its first lead of the game after Lannan delivered another shot on the run four minutes into the second half to put SC up 6-5. The teams traded goals until the Pride went up for good on Dobson’s tally.

Caitlin Grant opened up the scoring for Wheaton in the contest when she found the back of the cage 3:31 into the first half.

Lannan tied the game up at one apiece for the Pride after she sliced through the defense and went top shelf with 19:51 left in the opening half.

Back to back goals from Meredith Hurd gave the visitors a two-goal lead at the 8:01 mark. The Pride rallied back to tie the game at three after consecutive goals from Nicole Flores (Branford, Conn.) and Erin Doolan (Blauvelt, N.Y.). Flores rebounded her own shot off the post and found the back of the cage with 6:42 on the clock before Doolan’s shot deflected high into the air and slipped past the Wheaton keeper just under two minutes later.

The Lyons closed out the half scoring the final two goals to head into halftime with a 5-3 lead. Grant netted her second of the game as she cut through the Pride’s defense to make the score 4-3 before Sara Dimick netted the final goal of the opening frame with just 41 seconds remaining.

Wheaton caused problems for Springfield’s clear in the first half, as the Pride went just 8-of-14 on clears.

Lannan led the way with four goals and an assist, while Soucie netted two goals. McAulay was spectacular all game as she made 20 saves in the win.

Wheaton outshot the Pride 39-25 in the game and held a 16-5 advantage on draw controls. Hurd finished with a hat trick, while Grant and Dimick each added a pair of goals.

The Pride returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Mount Holyoke for a conference clash at 7:00 pm.
