SPRINGFIELD, Mass., February 21, 2006 - Springfield College freshman Jackie Mazzola (Framingham, Mass.) has been named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Women’s Gymnastics Freshman of the Week, in a report announced by the conference office for the week of Monday, February 20.
Mazzola, who resides in Framingham, Mass., had an outstanding tri-meet against Cortland State and Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) this past Sunday (Feb. 19), earning personal-bests on both the vault and balance beam, as the Pride defeated SUNY Cortland (181.000-175.975) and narrowly lost to Southern Connecticut (181.250-181.000).
Mazzola performed a solid front handspring, front somersault vault, scoring a 9.550 to finish second in the event, and then moved on to stick her balance beam routine for a 9.000 score to place ninth in that event. As just a freshman, Jackie is ranked 15th individually in all of Division III on the vault with a season average of 9.200.
SC, which is now ranked third in Division III according to the latest GymInfo poll, is currently 4-4 overall on the 2006 season as the Pride will next travel to No. 4 MIT for a dual-meet on Saturday afternoon, February 25, in a 1:00 p.m. start.
