Stow, Mass. - September 20, 2013 - The Springfield College men's golf team won the New England Collegiate Conference(NECC) Invitational registering a 329 team-score, Friday afternoon at Wedgewood Pines Country Club.
Babson took second behind the Pride with 335 strokes, followed by Newbury (340), Daniel Webster (348), Becker (357), and Mitchell (363).
Springfield senior Kyle DiFranco (East Longmeadow, Mass.) earned co-medalist honors, turning in a scorecard of 78. Tallying a tournament-leading five birdies - including a four on the front - DiFranco fired a two-over par 38 to open the round.
Adam Ziewacz (Simsbury, Conn.), who was the NECC Golfer and Rookie of the Year a season ago, totaled a 38 on the back nine to record an 81 and finish tied for third.
Placing third for the Pride was David Hashagen (Morris Plains, N.J.), who posted an 84, while teammate Joe Sabowicz (Farmington, Conn.) notched an 86. Mike Nowakowski (East Hampton, Conn.) rounded out the Pride's scoring with a 94.
Last season, the Pride won the NECC Championship and represented the conference at the NCAA Division III Championships. Springfield will have a chance to defend its title on October 5-6 at Wedgewood Pines Country Club.
