SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – January 20, 2007 – The Springfield College men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams both fell to perennially-strong Williams College this afternoon in Williamstown.
Williams captured both ends of the meet -- the men defeating SC (182-115), the women also winning (186-111).
On the men’s side, Springfield winners included junior Roy Burch (Warwick, Bermuda) in the 50 free with a national qualifying time of 21.17 seconds. Burch also won the 100 free with a time of 47.30 seconds. Freshman Jonathan Alberghini (Cumberland, Me.) took the 1-meter diving event by scoring 251.85 points. Freshman Matt Fitzgerald (Pelham, NH.) won the 3-meter diving event by scoring 253.20 points. SC went 1-2 in that event.
On the women’s side, Springfield winners included sophomore Kallie Pottle (Brewer, Me.) in the 100 back (1:02.93) and in the 200 back (2:13.11). The 200 free relay team of sophomore Moira Price (Berkeley Heights, N.J.), Pottle, senior Meaghan O’Hara (Bedford, N.H.), and senior Julianne McCormick (East Walpole, Mass.) was also victorious (1:44.89).
As was the case with the men, SC’s female divers had a great day. The biggest news saw SC junior Melissa Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) not only winning the 1-meter diving event, but also qualifying for nationals with her total of 252.15 points. SC went 1-2-3 as senior Natasha Skowronski (Adams, Mass.) scored 241.80 points for second, followed by sophomore Erin White (Glastonbury, Conn.) with 237.68.
In the 3-meter diving event, SC went 1-2-3-4. Skowronski placed first with 248.63 points, followed by Nelson (248.33), senior Cara Loux (Stratford, Conn.) (234.60), and freshman Michelle Reggio (Brooklyn, N.Y.) (229.95).
Next Saturday (Jan. 27), the SC men host Babson at 1 pm.
