Women's Cross Country Finishes Third at the Amherst Invitational in the 2010 Opener
Springfield, Mass. -- September 11, 2010 -- Lacey Cartier
proved to be the top finisher for the Springfield College women's cross country team in their 2010 season opener earlier today at the Amherst Invitational. As a team, SC placed third of four with 79 points.
Cartier, a senior from York, Maine, placed 12th as an individual with a time of 21:09.1.
Team scores saw host Amherst capture the team title with the minimum 15 points. The Lord Jeffs were followed by Connecticut College with 51 points, Springfield with 79, and Wheaton with 117.
Amherst placed the top seven individuals in the race, led by Christina Wong with a time of 20:13.9
In 17th place was Springfield's next best, junior Michelle Mirti (Pompton Plains, N.J.) at 21:34.4. Next was freshman Claudia Severance (Moultonborough, N.H.) in the 20th spot at 21:47.9. In 24th was sophomore Katie Burns (Billerica, Mass.) at 22:22.0. Next was freshman Erica Fisher (Chicopee, Mass.) in 25th at 22:35.5.
Next Saturday, Springfield will compete in the UMass Dartmouth Invitational at 11:15 am.

Jim Pennington enters his 28th season as head coach of the Springfield College women’s cross country and track and field teams in 2011-2012. Under Pennington’s direction, the Pride has recorded seven top 20 finishes at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and seven top 15 finishes at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
