Matthews Named Sports Imports/AVCA Men's Division III National Player of the Week

- After leading the Springfield College men's volleyball team to a four wins in the Springfield College Invitational last weekend, Alistair Matthews
has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Men's Division III National Player of the Week.
A 6-3 junior right side powered the third-ranked Pride to three wins over teams ranked in the AVCA Top 15 Coaches Poll over the weekend.
Matthews kicked off his play against No. 15 Kean, and in just two sets played, tallied four kills hitting .375 with two blocks. He then had a stellar performance against fourth-ranked and rival Juniata later that day, blasting 23 kills and hitting .326 in the highly contested five-set victory. The Freehold, N.J. native didn't let up against No. 14 Baruch, racking up another 13 kills while hitting an astounding .579.
Springfield finished the regular season 15-0 at home and has won 19 of its last 20, including nine in a row. He finished the week with 40 kills (4.0 per set) and a .397 attack percentage.
This is the 19th time a Springfield men's volleyball player has been named a Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week, with the most recent coming earlier this year when Angel Perez won it the week of February 14th.

With eight national championships to his credit, Charlie Sullivan will enter his 16th season as head coach of the men's volleyball team in 2014. In 15 previous years at the helm, Sullivan owns an overall record of 256-158 for a .618 winning percentage. Read more
