Vandersea Honored By The Gridiron Club of Greater Boston
Boston, Mass. - January 11, 2013
- Former Springfield College head football coach Howard Vandersea
was honored by The Gridiron Club of Greater Boston with the John Baronian Award for Lifetime Contribution to Football on Thursday evening at the Westin Waltham Hotel.
Vandersea, the Northeast Regional Coordinator for the National Football Foundation, spent 37 years of coaching football included head coaching stints of eight seasons at Springfield College and 16 seasons at Bowdoin College.
During his eight seasons at Springfield, Vandersea posted a record of 42-35, highlighted by an 8-2 campaign during the 1979 season.
The John Baronian Award was re-named in 2002 in honor of John Baronian (Tufts ’50), former president of the Gridiron Club and 1982 winner of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame’s Contribution to Amateur Football Award.

Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74
enters his 31st season as a head football coach in the fall of 2012. He enters his 29th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 28 years, he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980. Read more
