Men's Basketball Cruises By Penn State New Kensington, 109-62

Pittsburgh, Pa. - December 1, 2013 - The Springfield College men's basketball team rebounded from its first loss of the season with a dominating peformance as it posted a 109-62 victory over Penn State New Kensington in the consolation game of the Carnegie Mellon/DoubleTree Invitational on Sunday.

Springfield improved to 4-1 with the win and cracked the 100-point plateau for the second time in its last four games. Through five games this season, the Pride is averaging just under 95 points per game.

The Pride dominated play for the opening whistle as it raced out to a 28-8 lead just 7:50 into the contest. Springfield led by as many as 34 in the first half, and at one point in the second half, held a 47-point advantage.

Five different players scored in double figures, with Nick McKenna (Danvers, Mass.) scoring a career-high 20 points. Alex Garstka (Wesfield, Mass.) registered 16 points and eight assists, while Tim Swenson (Millbury, Mass.) notched 13 points.

Josh Downes (East Sandwich, Mass.) netted 11 points, Nick Sienkiewicz (Cranston, Mass.) recorded 10 points, and Robbie Burke (Cheshire, Mass.) hauled in a team-high 12 boards.

For his efforts throughout the weekend, Sean Martin (Rindge, N.H.) was named to the All-Tournament Team.

For the game, Springfield went 45-for-77 from the field, shooting 58.4%, and continued to share the basketball, racking up 37 assists. The Pride outscored Penn State New Kensington, 70-42 in the paint, received 66 points from its bench, and scored 32 fast break points in the win.

Springfield will head back to New England and prep for a non-conference clash with Trinity College on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
