Sullivan Named 2010 AVCA Division III Men's National Coach of the Year

Head Coach Charlie Sullivan Lexington, Ky. - May 5, 2010 - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced that Springfield College men's volleyball coach Charlie Sullivan has been selected as the 2010 AVCA Division III Men's National Coach of the Year.

Sullivan led the Pride (20-11) back to the top of Division III men's volleyball in 2010, as the squad hoisted their record-tying sixth Molten Division III Men's Invitational Championship trophy. The title was the fifth for Sullivan during his 12-year stint at the helm of the program. Springfield swept host Carthage College in the event's semifinals before taking down top-seeded UC Santa Cruz, 3-1, in the championship bout. In addition, the Pride made their first appearance in the semifinals of the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Tournament since the institution became affiliated with Division III in 1995-96.

Springfield qualified for the Molten Championship by winning the EIVA Division III regular season title; the Pride dropped only two matches to a Division III opponent all season, falling to rival Juniata College in five games and also succumbing to UC Santa Cruz in the first match of the campaign. Springfield was ranked in the AVCA Division III Men's Coaches Top 15 poll's top-three all season, spending four of those weeks as the top team in the nation.

With the 20-11 showing this season, Sullivan is now 173-135 in his 12 years at Springfield. He coached the 2010 AVCA Men's Division III National Player of the Year, AJ Nally, and had four student-athletes named to the 2010 AVCA Men's Division III All-America teams. In addition, the Pride produced its highest number of All-EIVA East selections in program history (4), while Sullivan was tabbed the EIVA Division III Coach of the Year.

The AVCA will formally present the award at the 2010 Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Kansas City, Mo., on Thursday, December 16. The luncheon is held in conjunction with the 2010 AVCA Annual Convention.
