NCAA BOUND - Men's Basketball Earns At-Large Bid to 2014 NCAA Championship



Springfield, Mass. - March 3, 2014 - For the second-straight season, the Springfield College men's basketball team is headed back to the NCAA Championship by virtue of an at-large berth. The Pride learned its fate on the selection show Monday afternoon, and will take on Mary Washington at Randolph Macon.

Springfield is in the midst of one of its finest seasons as a Division III program and currently owns a 20-7 record, marking just the third 20-win season in the 16-year tenure of head coach Charlie Brock.

One of 20 at-large bids from across the country, Springfield gathered to watch the selection show this afternoon and it was a tense and anxious environment, with 56 of the 62 participating schools being announced before the Pride.

This marks the fourth time that Brock he has led the Pride to the NCAA Championship. Springfield advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2000, reached the second round in 2005, and hosted a first round game in 2013.

Over the weekend, Springfield advanced to its third-straight New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship before coming up short to MIT.

The Pride has five players who are averaging in double figures this season, with Robbie Burke's (Cheshire, Mass.) 14.2 points per game leading the way. As a team, Springfield is shooting 48.1% from the field and rank in the top 15 in the nationally in assists per game.

Springfield College Men's Basketball Selected to NCAA Championship Mary Washington owns a 21-5 record and earned an automatic qualifier to the NCAA's after beating Christopher Newport University in the championship game of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament.

This will be Mary Washington's second appearance in the NCAA tournament. In the latest D3hoops.com poll, the Eagles were ranked No. 17. This will be the first meeting between the two schools.

Mary Washington is led by senior guard Bradley Riester, who averages 18 points per game. Junior Taylor Johnson scores 13.7 points per game, while senior Dylan Farinet averages 13.2 ppg, followed by senior Dajon Daniel at 11.2 points and senior Dom Morra at 7.9. Johnson leads with 6.6 rebounds per game followed by Farinet with 6.4. Riester ranks third in the nation with 94 three pointers made.
