Five from SC to Compete at the NCAA Div. III Track and Field Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – May 20, 2007 – The Springfield College men’s and women’s track and field teams will send a total of five athletes to the 2007 NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh this Thursday through Saturday, May 24-26.

There will be three from the men’s side competing for Springfield, including senior Alex Kampersal (Natick, Mass.), senior Cameron Turchetti (South Deerfield, Mass.), and junior Dominic Uguccioni (Colrain, Mass.).

Kampersal will compete in his specialty, the shot put. His best toss this season was 55-11 ¾. He is ranked third among NCAA Division III athletes entering the championships. Turchetti’s best throw in the javelin this season has been 193-3. He will rank 15th. Uguccioni’s best throw in the hammer thus far this season has been 175-0. He will also rank 15th.

On the women’s side, there will be two SC representatives, including sophomore Kelsey Bishop (Warwick, R.I.), and freshman Nikki Hay (Norwalk, Conn.). Bishop will compete in the hammer throw. Her best throw this year has been 170-6, ranking her sixth in the nation. Hay will compete in the triple jump. Her best of 37-10 is currently 12th nationally.

All five of these athletes finished extremely well at last weekend’s ECAC Division III Championships at Oneonta, N.Y. Kampersal and Hay finished first in their events, while Bishop, Turchetti, and Uguccioni finished second in theirs.

The men finished second of 44 scoring teams at the ECAC’s with 84 points. The women finished third of 43 scoring teams with 48 points.
