SPRINGFIELD, Mass., November 11, 2006 – Springfield College junior Roy Burch (Warwick, Bermuda) and sophomore Moira Price (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) each won three individual events, but the Division I University of Rhode Island defeated the Pride this afternoon at the Art Linkletter Natatorium. The URI men defeated SC, 162-138, and the URI women edged the Pride, 151-149.
Burch captured the 100 backstroke (53.14), the 50 free (21.72), and the 100 free (48.47) to lead SC. Price won the 100 breaststroke (1:08.99), the 50 free (25.13), and the 200 breaststroke (2:31.78) to lead the Pride women.
Other individual winners for the men included senior tri-captain Ryan Mahoney (Westford, Mass.) in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.40), freshman Ryan Mackstutis (Torrington, Conn.) in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.10), and freshman Michael Osborne (Middletown, Conn.) in the one-meter dive (229.42). Osborne also finished second in the three-meter dive with 209.47 points.
Other individual winners for the women included sophomore Kallie Pottle (Brewer, Maine) in the 100 backstroke (1:02.89) and the 100 butterfly (1:02.11), junior Melissa Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) in the one-meter dive (205.41) and the three-meter dive (237.53), sophomore Kristen Schadow (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) in the 200 butterfly (2:14.91), and freshman Megan Cooney (Hemmelstown, Pa.) in the 200 individual medley (2:18.13).
The URI men were led by junior Ryan Sheatsley with victories in the 1,000 free (9:53.06), the 200 butterfly (1:59.01), and the 500 free (4:46.76). The URI women were led by sophomore Kelsey Foy with wins in the 1,000 free (10:45.31) and the 500 free (5:13.78), and by Cassie Mizia with victories in the 200 free (2:01.11) and the 100 free (55.29).
SC men’s and women’s swimming and diving will next compete at Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon, November 18th, at 1:00 p.m.
