Men's Gymnastics Splits in Last Home Meet, Defeating MIT, Losing to William and Mary

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – March 11, 2007 – Freshman Derek Gygax captured the All-Around in leading his William & Mary men’s gymnastics team to a pair of victories in a tri-meet versus Springfield College and MIT this afternoon at SC’s Blake Arena. William & Mary finished with a score of 203.550, while Springfield placed second at 186.100, and MIT third at 182.450.

In the all-around, W&M’s Gygax (Stevensville, Md.) scored 48.150. MIT took the next five spots. No one from Springfield competed in every event. The hosts were minus two of their very top performers due to injury and illness.

William & Mary Head Coach Cliff Gauthier was especially pleased with those who competed on the pommel horse. As a team, the Tribe went 1-2-3-4 in that event. Junior Aaron Ingram (Holden, Mass.) had a homecoming of sorts by finishing first in the pommel horse. His score was 8.700. He was followed by sophomore James Prim (Hendersonville, N.C.) at 8.650, and Gygax at 8.600.

Other winners for William & Mary included sophomore Sloan Crawford (Burlington, Ontario) in the floor exercise (8.700) and in the high bar (8.450); junior Andrew Hunt (Upper Black Eddy, Pa.) in the parallel bars (8.750); junior David Locke (Natick, Mass.) in the vault (8.550); and Prim in the rings (9.450) in the only score above 9.000 on the day.

For Springfield, the top finish of the day was a second produced by sophomore Matt Bolognese (Stony Brook, N.Y.) with his 8.700 in the rings. Freshman Keith Stumpf (Williamsville, N.Y.) took a third in the vault (8.100). Freshman Josh Spencer (Las Vegas, Nev.) placed fifth in the high bar (8.050). Freshman Matt Tocchio (Braintree, Mass.) was sixth in the pommel horse (8.400). On the floor exercise, junior JJ Ferreira (Naugatuck, Conn.) (8.300) and Stumpf (8.000) placed 5-6.

For MIT, the top place-finisher was senior Brad Sutton (Rochester Hills, Mich.) with his fourth-place tie in the pommel horse (8.450).
