Providence, R.I. - March 27, 2012 - The Springfield College men's tennis team swept the singles competition as they handled Rhode Island College, 8-1, on Tuesday afternoon. at the RIC Tennis Courts.
The Pride improves to 4-6 with the win, while the Anchormen (0-5) are still searching for their first victory.
Springfield came out of the doubles round up, 2-1, thanks to an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles by freshman Kyle Mersereau and junior Benjamin Burnap. Jesse Boyd and sophomore Joe Giannelli paired up to secure an 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles.
The Pride swept all six singles matches to earn the victory. Mersereau defeated Alex Werchadlo (6-3, 6-4) at the top spot, while Burnap defeated freshman Anthony DeFrancesco, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2 singles. Springfield senior Doug Nickerson also notched an impressive (6-0, 6-2) victory at No. 4 singles.
Springfield will open up New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday when it hosts Clark at 7:00 pm.
