NEWS
U.S. CONGRESSMAN AND ABC ANCHOR ADVISE GRADUATES AT 117TH COMMENCEMENT
Rep. Richard E. Neal (D-Mass.) spoke to 700 graduates and an audience
of approximately 3,500 at the College's 117th undergraduate commencement
May 18 on Blake Field.

At the College's graduate commencement ceremony held May 17 on the Administration
Green, Robin Roberts, news anchor for ABC News' "Good Morning America,"
addressed graduates of the College's advanced degree programs. This weekend
marked one of our most successful commencement events. Separate ceremonies
were scheduled for graduate and undergraduate students and designed to
honor each body specifically.

SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE BREAKS GROUND FOR RESIDENCE HALL
The earth moved at Springfield College in June as excavation began for
construction of a new $10 to $11 million suite-style student residence
hall scheduled to open in August 2004. Springfield College President Richard
B. Flynn, Board of Trustees Chairman John A. Odierna, Student Trustee
J. Larson Segerdahl, and other college officials turned the first shovels
at the Alden Street site of the future four-story brick building, across
from the Townhouses.
REUNION 2003 SUCCESS DESPITE RAIN
More than 1000 people returned to the shores of Lake Massasoit for Reunion
2003 June 5-8. On Friday, nearly 130 people played in the golf tournament
held at Hampden Country Club in Hampden where Pres. Richard Flynn played
the twelfth hole with each of the foursomes. Other events included the
traditional reunion parade, a beach party and lobster bake, and a reception
for David Allen Reed Society and Amici ad Infinitum Society members. (See

EMPLOYEES RECOGNIZED AT RECEPTION
The College hosted its annual Employee Recognition Reception in Cheney
Hall May 19. Approximately 80 employees of the College were recognized
for their years of service to the institution. Among those honored for
thirty-five years of service were David Carlson, professor of English;
Gerald Davis, archivist; and Mimi Murray, professor of physical education.
Fr. Leo James Hoar, director of the United Campus Ministry and Spiritual
Life Center, received this year's Cheney Award for his dedication and
service to the College community during the past year.
EXPERTS ON AFRICA EXAMINE FOREIGN POLICY
Experts on African countries explored implications of the new U.S. foreign
policy at the 10th annual conference of the African and African-American
Education, Research and Training Institute (AADERT) held in June in the
College's Brennan Center. Read

RED SOX, CARDINALS HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINERS, BOTH SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE
GRADS, REUNITE ON TUESDAY As the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals
faced each other this week for the first time since the 1967 World Series,
their head athletic trainers, Barry Weinberg '73 and Jim Rowe '87, also
came face-to-face for the first time since their last reunion at their
alma mater, Springfield College. More head athletic trainers in Major
League Baseball received their bachelor's degree at Springfield College
than at any other institution in the country.

NOTARY BROTHERS NAMED TO VERIZON ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM Seniors Jon
and Mike Notary starred on the men's cross country and track & field
teams, and in the classroom. Read

SIX NAMED TO ECAC ALL-STAR TEAMS Senior All-American Ali Gerrish
headlines an elite group of spring sport student-athletes who are selected
to regional all-star teams in men's and women's lacrosse, and softball.

MEN'S LACROSSE TAYLOR BROWN NAMED ALL-AMERICAN The freshman sensation,
who was one of Division III's top scorers, propelled the Pride to the
NCAA Division III Tournament for the third time in four seasons. Read more.
CLAPP, HENRY ACHIEVE VERIZON ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS Junior
All-American Marisa Clapp and senior Kelly Henry are selected to the Verizon
