WHIPPER ADDRESSES FIRST GRADUATING CLASS SC SCHOOL OF HUMAN SERVICES CHARLESTON CAMPUS South Carolina State Rep. Jackson Seth Whipper addressed the first graduating class of the Charleston Campus of the Springfield College School of Human Services at commencement ceremonies on Jan. 7. at the Charleston Museum Auditorium. Robert J. Willey, dean of the School of Human Services based in Springfield, Mass., awarded diplomas. Read more.

2005 VOLLEYBALL HALL OF FAME-MORGAN CLASSIC Springfield College will host the Annual Volleyball Hall of Fame Classic, the premier men's college volleyball tournament in the East, Friday, Feb. 4, through Saturday, Feb. 5, in Blake Arena. This tournament features defending Division I national champion BYU, along with perennial powers D-I Penn State and Ball State, and three-time D-III national champions Springfield College.

COLLEGE HOSTS 4TH ANNUAL BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME HIGH SCHOOL INVITATIONAL Springfield College once again hosted the Annual Basketball Hall of Fame High School Invitational at Blake Arena. The tournament, held earlier this month, brought together some of the best boys teams - and talent - in the nation.


OBITUARIES

Louis Ampolo, Springfield College professor emeritus, died Nov. 16, 2004. A professional dancer his entire life, Ampolo was a professor of dance at the College from 1970 to 1990. He was a member of the Screen Extras Guild in California, and the Actor's Equity in New York City. He served as a private in the United States Army during World War II, and received the American Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was predeceased by his wife O'Dean, and leaves his children, nieces and nephews, and longtime friend Otis Best of Tampa, Fla.

John Coons '50, G'56, of Monson, Mass., former director of the College's planned giving program, died Dec. 17, 2004. A co-captain of the Springfield College football team while an undergraduate,  Coons went on to coach football at Dean Academy, Springfield College, Rochester Polytechnic Institute, East Longmeadow (Mass.) High School (ELHS), Colby College, and the University of Vermont at Montpelier. He also coached hockey at ELHS. Coons was a Navy veteran of World War II, a deacon of the First Church in Monson, and an avid fisherman, reader, and sports fan. He leaves his wife Ellie and their children and grandchildren. A springtime celebration of Coon's life is being planned.

Harold (Hal) Lynch '41, a former Springfield College Alumni Director, died Jan. 17 in San Antonio, Texas.  Serving most recently as president of the American Laminating Company, he also served as a YMCA professional and a college administrator.  An active golfer, he was a member of the Fair Oaks Ranch and County Club. He served as a captain with the Army Air Corps during World War II, flying more than 54 combat missions before being shot down over Brenner Pass in northern Italy. Imprisoned in a POW camp near Nuremberg, Germany, Lynch escaped to return to his outfit. He held the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart, six Air Medals, a Presidential Unit Citation, and the POW Medal. He leaves his children and grandchild. Dorothy, his wife of 38 years, predeceased him.


CALENDAR

CONCERTS, THEATRE, ART EXHIBITIONS THIS SEASON AT SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE Springfield College's winter/spring series of visual and performing arts programs open to the public will lead with the Feb. 5 JENA Company of New York's performance of "My Soul Is a Witness," the stirring musical dramatizing key events of the Civil Rights Movement.  Other highlights will include an evening of swing dancing, a reading by award-winning author Magdalena Gomez, and art exhibitions by area professional artists and student artists.  Most of the events are free of charge.  Read more.

The Office of Alumni Relations is accepting nomination forms for the four alumni awards presented annually to individuals who distinguish themselves by service to the College, community, state, nation, or field of athletics.   To submit a nomination for The Tarbell Medallion, the Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna Award, the Athletic Hall of Fame, or the Young Alumnus/a Award, click here.  The nomination deadline is March 1, 2005.
